Job Description

Feller (Sawyer) – Wildland Fire Service

A feller, often called a sawyer, is responsible for cutting down trees and removing hazardous vegetation using chainsaws or specialized felling equipment. This role requires significant skill, training, and certification to ensure safety and efficiency, especially in wildfire suppression efforts.

Key Duties:

  • Tree Felling – Cutting down trees that pose fire risks or obstruct firefighting operations.

  • Limbing & Bucking – Removing limbs from fallen trees and cutting logs into manageable sections.

  • Hazard Tree Mitigation – Identifying and removing weakened, dead, or dangerous trees that could create hazards.

  • Fireline Construction – Cutting trees and vegetation to create firebreaks or fuel breaks.

  • Chainsaw Maintenance – Sharpening, refueling, and maintaining saws to ensure operational readiness.

  • Coordinating with Fire Crews – Working closely with firefighters, heavy equipment operators, and supervisors to clear paths and execute fire suppression strategies.

Qualifications & Skills:

✔️ Proficiency with chainsaws (S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws certification is often required).
✔️ Knowledge of tree physics, felling techniques, and safety protocols.
✔️ Experience working in rugged, remote terrain under hazardous conditions.
